Aula de Inglês - Our Region: Real English Contents!


TEXT 1: Lagoa de Velhos’s origin and culture!

The City Downtown and The little Chapel
 1- “Lagoa de Velhos” is a small-big city located in a rural part of “Rio Grande do Norte”, Brazil.
 2- The origin of its name was about a fact that happened in 1820. A couple of elderlies arrived in a place where there was a little lake. They liked the local and decided to live there.
3- Around of this period there were, in this region, lots of horsemen that used to sell different kind of things among them, like goods, home objects and so on. They used to say: “Let’s have a rest at the elderlies’ lake? For that reason the city is called by this name.

        4- During a long period the city belonged to Mrs. Joana Gomes, although, it has been sold to João Marques Ferreira da Silva or João Anselmo Marques da Silva, Mrs. Severiana’s husband.  This man had a big family, so he had to build a new house for his wife and nine sons. That’s why he had built, in 1854, “The Big House” - one of the city’s sights. Nowadays with 151 years, the house has a “*pelourinho” inside of it
Post Script: *Pelourinho” - It’s a place where the slaves were punished.

TEXT 2: This is “The Faith Stone” or “Red Stone” in Barcelona-RN.
     There is a nice view around here.There are not beaches here, but there are many different shapes of stones and mountains! It’s a beautiful place to visit!

TEXT 3: A pleasant City!
São Paulo do Potengi's Main Square
1- If you’re thinking about spending your vacation or relax in a beautiful city, São Paulo do Potengi might be the place! It’s a pleasant, medium sized, tourist town; about 70 kilometers from the capital of Rio Grande do Norte, Natal. There isn’t too much pollution because there are not many cars on the streets. There are too many tourists here and the climate is great! It’s a safe city because there’s hardly any crime.

         2-There are a few restaurants, but the food is excellent. There’s not much unemployment, but, unfortunately, there are very few factories. There are lots of shops here, although there is not enough money to spend on them.

     3-Now and again people use to visit this place in order to Know “Monsenhor Expeditor’s Memorial” or take a bath at the “Big Field Dam – specially on Sundays and Saturdays.” Don’t worry! It’s easy to get a hotel; there are plenty of them in our city! Maybe therefore, there’s no inflation in this sector.

TEXT 4: “Barcelona's Foudation”

    1- This is the most pleasant city to go to. If you want to know it better, you should take a bus from “Alves business”, take a motor taxi or even go by car. Barcelona is near to São Tomé, about 18 kilometers between them.
        2- In the beginning of the 19th century, according to scholars, black-woodsmen from Serido’s area and other cities, used to move toward here looking for good places to live in. “Salgado” – like it was known – didn’t have good water because the salty soil; but it was in a riverside area.
3-“Câmara Cascudo”, our Brazilian writer - confirm us in his book that Mr. José Maria do Nascimento, natural from “Bodó – RN”, was the first citizen to arrive here. 
4- About 1929, after São Tomé has promulgated its emancipation, Mr. Félix Gomes de Melo suggested for the councilmen – and the “Municipal Hall” accepted – to change the name of the hamlet from “Salgado” to “Barcelona”.
5- With reference to many people believe the allusion wasn’t to the Spanish city. The new denomination was inspired in order to remind him about the North of the country, during the period he was working in Amazon, at the “Barcelona Riverside Rubber Plantation”, which belonged to his brother.

The most landmark we have is the Faith Stone at the entrance of the City. It's a very beautiful post card!               
6- The institution of Barcelona was in January 1st, 1959. You must visit us! You will have known the best place to enjoy and relax!
